A Minyan of Rabbis

promoted by Rosi

There were dozens of clergypersons at Tuesday’s Senate Judiciary Hearings on marriage equality, representing many faiths and both sides of the issue. One of the largest contingents was a group of Reform, Reconstructionist, and Conservative rabbis from around the state, speaking in favor of marriage equality. Garden State Equality’s Steven Goldstein referred to them as “a minyan of rabbis.”

Thank you, Deciminyan, for videotaping it and for your thoughtfulness in posting it.  I am so deeply proud of the clergy from the 19 faiths, denominations and movements across New Jersey who support marriage equality.  But to be embraced by your own – well, I cried when I watched these rabbis at the hearing and I cried just now when I watched the video. Being embraced by your own may be something a lot of people take for granted, but I can’t – even after all these years, my parents don’t accept who I am, and I am nearly 50 years old, openly gay for half my lifetime.  So when these rabbis embrace who I am, when Loretta embraces who I am, well, it may seem like no big deal, but oh, it is.  It moves my entire world.  I can’t even write this without crying.  I am so moved.  I am so grateful.

That was my favorite part of this testimony.  The sentiments expressed by the others were beautiful and heart-warming as well, but it also nice to see the Talmud being used to skewer the sanctimonious the way that they so often use scripture to attack their adversaries.

Maybe it would be best if we got rid of all of the politicians in Trenton/Washington and replaced them with Talmudic scholars.  Even though I am a hostile agnostic, I would sooner trust them to make the right decisions than the reprehensible backroom dealers on both sides of the aisle in our state’s and nation’s capitals.

Obviously, there are exceptions like SML Weinberg, but I think that we would all agree that if most elected officials were as honest and trustworthy as her, we wouldn’t have most of the problems that we have.
