“A Wall Tearing at Our Moral Fabric”

Flanked on the podium by same-sex couples and their children, Steve Goldstein, President of Garden State Equality, today spoke about “The Civil Union wall tearing at New Jersey’s moral fabric.” He said, “Its time to tear down that wall and end the stigma.” Civil Unions have not been fixed, as some politicians promised over a year ago, and cannot be fixed as they create a separate and unequal status which invites others to discriminate.

In 2010 the N. J. Supreme Court decided not to intercede in Lamda’s case which called for the court to  end Civil Unions and insure compliance with its originally mandated equality. Instead the court required further proceedings in a Superior Court. Today Haley Gorenberg of Lamda Legal filed a lawsuit in the Mercer County Court arguing that the Civil Union Law violates both the NJ Constitution and the Fourteenth Amendment of the Federal Constitution.

The promise of Marriage Equality lives on, buoyed by the recent success in New York, the determination of Garden State Equality, Lamda Legal and the LGBT community, and the perception of so many New Jerseyans that it is the right thing to do.

This should have happened two years ago when the push for legislation failed.  It’s only being embarrassed by NY that forced the hand to do this now.

Yes, I will likely again be accused of not doing this myself since I could have, but I have not put myself out there as the lead for the effort to get marriage equality.  I have put my self out for other issues, and this is one that I support but do not see as the one that I would be the best measure for.
